The BigBlue SolarPowa 28 is a compact folding solar charger designed for phones, power banks, GPS units, cameras, lights, and other small USB devices. Its four connected panels fold to roughly notebook size and weigh about 1.48 pounds, making it practical for camping, road trips, emergency kits, and off-grid travel.
BigBlue rates the panel at 28 watts, with approximately 24 watts of working power under suitable conditions. The current B401DD version includes two USB-C ports and one USB-A port. Each port supports up to 5V/3A, while all three share a combined maximum output of 5V/4.8A.
That shared limit matters. Connecting three devices divides the available power. It does not unlock a hidden reserve of extra sunlight.
Solar Performance
The monocrystalline solar cells have a manufacturer-stated conversion efficiency of up to 25.4%. Real-world output still depends on sunlight intensity, panel angle, temperature, clouds, shading, cable quality, and the charging requirements of the connected device.
For the best performance, unfold the entire panel and aim it directly toward strong sunlight. Partial shade can cause a sharp reduction in output, even when only one section is covered. Hanging the panel from a moving backpack may generate some power, but a stationary setup with a clear view of the sun will be far more effective.
Charging and Energy Storage
The two USB-C ports use modern connectors, but BigBlue only documents 5V output. There are no published higher-voltage USB Power Delivery profiles, so the SolarPowa 28 should not be treated as a reliable laptop charger. The cable may fit. The required power may remain politely unavailable.
The panel also has no internal battery. It generates electricity only while sufficient sunlight reaches the cells. Pairing it with a separate USB power bank is the most dependable approach. The power bank can collect energy during good conditions, then recharge your devices later without repeated interruptions from passing clouds.
Setup and Durability
Included carabiners allow the panel to hang from a tent, backpack, vehicle, fence, or other support. There is no integrated kickstand, so maintaining a productive angle may require a chair, rock, bag, or minor act of campsite engineering.
The solar surface is rated IP44 and uses rugged 900D polyester Oxford fabric. The USB junction box is not waterproof, so the ports, cables, storage pocket, and connected devices should remain protected from rain and standing water.
Overall Assessment
The BigBlue SolarPowa 28 is a capable portable charger for small USB electronics. It combines useful solar output, three charging ports, manageable weight, and straightforward operation.
Its lack of battery storage, a kickstand, DC output, and laptop-grade USB-C charging limits its versatility. For phones, power banks, cameras, GPS units, lights, and emergency gear, however, it offers a sensible balance of portability, efficiency, and real-world usefulness.
